Gardener By Shel Silverstein

We gave you a chance
To water the plants.
We didn’t mean that way– –
Now zip up your pants.

I like this poem for three reasons. One, it is short. The foundation of any good poem is that it does not take a long time to read. Second, it's funny. If I'm gonna read  a poem it should either illuminate problems with our society or make me laugh. Obviously this one does the latter. Third and almost as important as the first, there is no analysis that needs to be done. If you have to do some analysis with this poem then there is something wrong with you. If more poems just said what they meant and did not need to be analyzed everybody's life would be easier.

This poem is amazing. I'm glad you picked it, it's really short and funny. If I could imagine you as a poem, this poem would be you Malcolm. Except you're not short, or funny. Just kidding! So anyway, since you said that something would be wrong with whoever has to analyze this poem, I'm totally going to do it. The first lines are like a warning because the author gave the person a chance, to water those plants, and they obviously didn't. So there's no second chance, to water those plants. The third line however, is a tricky one. "We didn't mean that way--"? This could mean several things. I took it as that the person probably unzipped his pants, and that is why in the last line, the author says to zip up the pants. Nice poem Malcolm, nicely done.
